India: Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: Millions Cast Vote As BJP Seeks Third Term
The citizens of the north Indian state of Haryana cast their vote to elect members for 90 legislative assembly constituencies. Nearly 20 million people were eligible to vote in the state. The voter turnout stood at a little over 61 per cent at 5 PM (IST). The opposition Congress party is looking to de-seat Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power, with its leaders banking on anti-incumbency and factors such as farmers' distress. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP, with its Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and former CM Manohar Lal Khattar, is seeking a third consecutive term in power. The BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar served as Haryana CM from October 2014 to March 2024, following which he was succeeded by Nayab Singh Saini. The results for over 1,000 are to be announced on October 8.
