As a retired Hollywood camera operator, I maintain that the story line is key. No amount of pro equipment can salvage a bad movie. And in line with that, the iPhone certainly seems to meet any challenge and is sufficient to tell the story.

We’re less than 3 years away from an iPhone taking out the consumer mirrorless market. Most people need to realize just like he said “it’s hard to see the difference on an iPad” that is what people watch content on these days. Even so a phone with a much smaller screen.

I came here because I am picking up an iPhone 14 Pro Max today and was curious about the video. I've been working in video and film production for 10 years. I am shocked at how good this looks. Yeah, so it's not perfect. The fact that it's close is good enough for 99% of low budget use-cases that don't involve a client actually on set. I will for sure be sneaking b-roll shots into commercials from time to time. Why not? It's the story that matters anyways not the highlight rolloff, lol.

THANKS FOR WATCHING! Were you able to see the difference? What gave it away? Anything that surprised you? 📝Comment below 😃

I'd say for amateurs like myself, an iPhone Pro would definitely suffice for most purposes, such as basic street photography and vlogging. And the filming you've done with the iPhone is magnificent!

I guessed it right. Every phone today has that sharp contrast between the lighter and the darkest parts of the scene due to limited dynamic range.

Yes. Guessed it right 100% of the time. But yeah, it's incredibly close in the shots that you chose.
That said, I definitely prefer the less digital feeling look of the Red which is the result of every frame being a high dinamic range single exposure as opposed the computational photography tech of the iPhone.

I’m on a budget and do need to upgrade from my IPhone 8 that doesn’t hold a charge much more than 3 hours if that! I have been shooting a lot of videos on this old phone and do have a Panasonic HC-V180. It has a incredible zoom but really not more clear than this! I need a new phone so I’m going to look for this!

The video in the iPhone 14 pro/ProMax surprised me how good it is. Shot some video in a corn maze the other night that kind of blew me away. But it's nowhere near as fun to shoot on as the komodo.

It’s wild to imagine how much more like a 10K movie an iPhone is going to look 5-10 years from now

I just got a 14 Pro max so I'm extremely happy of how close it is to such a high caliber cinema camera. Nevertheless, I did guess right and it was one thing that gave it away for me: Light. Especially golden hour and night clips were of clear difference. The red is much more soft and defined whereas the iPhone has some harshness to it. Despite so, it's really impressive and crazy how good phones have become in the recent two years or so. All I need now is a DJI gimble and the sky is the limit! I'm really happy with this comparison. Thank you for making this video!

Yes, I guessed it right. you're probably not gonna be able to see that much difference on youtube. But its different on your pc on a nice 4k monitor

That was close. iPhone is really close and I did get it right just cz of the natural handshake thing. Great video 🙌

Honestly, I wouldn't feel so strongly against iPhone cinematography if Apple stopped marketing it so excessively as "Pro" and "Cinematic" and terms like this. It's true, iPhone cameras have come a very long way and are insanely good compared to consumer cameras, but still miles off from anything that's truly intended for "Pro" users and "Cinematic" use cases.
If Apple were to rename the "Cinematic" mode to just simply "Blur background", I'd be completely fine with it. But as long as it's called "Cinematic", I feel like it's blatant false advertising.

I got it right. Komodo rendered the light lamps better. But iPhone is still awesome.

I think on certain clips it's almost impossible to tell, but I think the dynamic range is a bit better on the Red and the depth of field is shallower. Also with difficult lighting like bright lights in dim alleyway, you could see the optical quality of the iPhone being inferior. A lot more lens flare showing up on the video.

Some of the bright spots clipping or having less range transitioning to shadows gave the iphone away pretty fast but at a glance not too noticeable. Excited I just got the phone.

iPhones are great to have in the tool box. But honestly I bought the iPhone 14 pro max after watching a bunch of test videos comparing real cameras to the iPhone. I immediately realized upon getting the smartphone I needed a real camera. I’m not upset about my purchase but I definitely feel like if you want a real camera look just get a camera

I have a 10, 000 dollar camera and an iPhone 14 Max Pro with Beastgrip lenses and guess what? The large bulky camera is no longer used, I use it for all professional stuff, legal depositions, architectural, short-films, portraits, epic landscape photography, etc. Why would you want to carry around a bulky over-sized camera? Why would you hike with that on a mountain or walk around in a city? The iphone may not have the fancy full size sensor, but if you combine with post-editing AI software it comes pretty close and nobody is going to care that you used a full-sized sensor. Mary my words, we are just a few years away from heavy bulky cameras becoming obsolete, this includes DSLRs. Technology and AI is exponentially growing at a rate that most people can't even comprehend. YES, you will have optical and sensor tech on iPhones rivaling high-end Sony cameras, it's not a question of IF, it's a question of when.
