Were Achaemenids & Sasanians Iranian or Persian empires? Were ancient peoples of Ukraine an Iranian people? Was Ms. Mahsa Amini (a Kurdish woman from Iran) Iranian or Persian? She was murdered by the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sept. 2022.
I used to think there were two Persian empires before Islam - the Achaemenid and Sasanian. But my guest scholar in this episode disagrees. Also, contrary to other scholars, he doesn't think that Hellenism was a foreign element in the Middle East. He tells us about the Iranian National Identity, and why Persia's name was changed in the 20th century.

Dr. Khodadad Rezakhani is a lecturer and a senior research fellow at Leiden University. He is a historian of Global Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages, with a focus on Central and West Asia from 500-700 CE. His research focuses on the Sasanian and Early Islamic economy of the Near East.
