That would suck if you're waiting for search and rescue to find you using their chopper's thermal camera and it turns out your survival blanket is making you invisible.

And they all laughed when i wore aluminum foil to hide from the aliens.

May come in handy in the near future when we are all being hunted by predator drones.

If you're on the run hiding from thermals you are in some SERIOUS shit. Some women don't give up...

The problem is the thermal blanket will absorb some heat from your body (eventually) and you will be seen by thermals. You need to get a layer inbetween you and the emergency blanket to absorb your heat so the blanket stays at ambient temperature. You may even need a gap between the emergency blanket and whatever else you use to absorb your body heat.

that is actually pretty cool, imagine if the guys that were being hunted by the predator had a cheap thermal blanket or two ?

About 20 years ago, when thermals were being used to spot military snipers and old sgt used an umbrella and snuck up to 20 yards or so of the spotter. He wanted to prove to the sniper candidates that there was a way to be hidden.

this is great survival information, not everyone wants to be found, you should do more videos like evasion, distractions and redirections, hide and seek, blending in, cell phones, traveling undetected, how to get a fake ID and so-forth

Sorry guys. 5 years as a police tactical flight officer operating IR-detecting camera. Tested all kinds of cover. The blanket shows up as an unnatural patch against the ground, since the heat emitted is slightly different; at first it shows up darker than surrounding ground coz it blocks heat from the ground as well as from you. The blanket will eventually heat from your body and it’ll be a big square-ish glowing beacon on the forest floor. Poly tarps are actually invisible to infra-red, so you can see IR right through them almost like it’s Saran Wrap. Even inside a small building like a shed, there’s quickly enough body heat built up that’ll emit from cracks, around doors etc. Detected a missing person in exactly this fashion. I once detected a guy hiding in a house deck plastic utility box by the unnatural heat emitted around the edge of where the top closes. The big difference is, cameras used by police at $300-500thousand are much more sensitive and discerning in small variations in the heat variations of objects, compared to your device. You’d be shocked at how much we can see from 1000 ft AGL.

flir operator: "I lost them! the just disappeared off my thermals"
pilot: "yeah, well how about we target that man sized burrito wrapped in tinfoil right there?"

There is indeed a marked difference in heat signatures. Therefore, a combined approach of emergency blankets and local camouflage such as sod earth tree branches and grasses or plants might be an idea. All that said, there is a great difference between a hand held device and a thermal or ir unit on an aircraft.

I’m 100% positive that I’m on some sort of government watchlist because of all this content I’ve been watching in regards to ir leds and thermal avoidance lmao.

The blanket likely only works for a very limited mount of time, once it gets heated by the warmth it traps, I think it will start to glow itself (be it more diffuse than the original heat-source).

Want to really mess with thermals, stuff an mre heater in the bush by a tree. It'll heat the area up enough to get their attention while you leave the area.

This idea was brought up in the Marine Corps in the mid 80's. There was a Marine whose father fought wild fires. The fire fighters were given a blanket that would protect them in case the fire came back at them. The Marine and his father conducted experiments with blanket and IR cameras to find fire hot spots. According to his report, if the blanket was reversed to reflect the heat back to the wearer, it was very effective at camouflaging ones heat signature.

*My bug out shelter includes an evasion room underground. I redirected a small stream over the dirt and gravel above the cement room when done, so you can use a $1, 000, 000 IR and nope you won't see it. Charlie taught us a thing or two.*
