2017's Power Rangers: The Franchise that Never Was

2017’s Power Rangers was a film that had a lot of hype leading up to its release, but once it came out it was quickly forgotten by a majority of moviegoers. Although it may have its fans and staunch supporters, it certainly didn’t kick start the franchise that the filmmakers and studios hoped it would, and we never got to see the sequel that was teased at the end of the film.

In this video essay I take a look at the history of film, discover why it never got a follow up, and offer some of my personal thoughts on it.

I mostly agree with your observations. It was definitely one of those "let them cook" situations where it felt like "if they could just get the sequel to finish telling the story, then this will be a good story"

I personally love this film and was really excited for more, having a more grounded look at the characters would’ve been interesting throughout more films. It’s interesting - usually, I see the opposite where people wanted it to be more grounded, and thought Elizabeth Banks was being too campy for the overall tone of the movie.

I wasn’t a PR fan before the movie. I saw it in the theaters when it came out. I liked it. The kids had charisma. The story was pretty good. I would have gone to a PR II.

I loved this movie for the same reasons I loved man of steel😩 I think people wanted them to just “be” the power rangers from jump with no origin story. The reason that worked with our OG rangers is because the show preceded the eventual movies so they could get right to the action

A lot of people who are not fans of Power Rangers were always going to scoff at the idea of a movie and were likely to never see it. I’m not even sure if it got rave reviews would have made any difference.

I liked the film. I thought the characters were good, I like how Zordon was a terribly flawed leader and how he grew by forgoing his resurrection to bring Billy back
