Lyrics :

Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
So they won't know where I've gone.
Freight train, freight train, comin' round the bend
Freight train, freight train, gone again
One of these days turn that train around
Go back to my hometown.
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
So they won't know where I've gone.
One more place I'd like to be
One more place I'd love to see
To watch those old blue ridge mountains climb
As I ride ol' number nine.
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
So they won't know where I've gone.
When I die please bury me deep
Down at the end of Bleecker street
So I can hear ol' number nine
As she goes rollin' by.
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Freight train freight train goin' so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
So they won't know where I've gone.

Such great blend of voices. I saw them
From 1964 until Mary’s passing in2009

I sang this song when I was 3 years old. I thank my mother for her impeccable taste in music. That's why I can "hear" Django Reinhart and Chet Baker

I love this rendition from Peter, Paul and Mary more than any other, but my favorite from them is still Stewball. Polly Von is also a very close second.

No three voices ever blended together better in harmony than theirs. Masterful singers and players.

Fantastic! Grew up with this song, Dad used to sing it to me/ with me, on car trips. Listened to the (original) Elizabeth Cotten version and wondered why Dad's lyrics were so different! He sings the Peter, Paul and Mary version.

This is just perfection. I saw them twice, and they were brilliant.

I use to sing this while performing with my father on the Tops In Blue circuit back in the 50's when he was in the Air Force. Father and son act from 1955-64.

As a boy I'd lie in bed at night and hear the lonesome whistle of a distant freight train.

Brings back happy memories of my 70's childhood! My mum used to play record version by the Travellers, but I canny find it anywhere. Can anyone help me find it? The album also had Blowing in the Wind, and Polly Von..

I like the original 1960s cut better than this remaster.
