“What if they run?”
“Then they’re VC!
“But what if they don’t?”
“Then they’re *well-disciplined* VC!”

I was a Blackhawk Crew Chief for 6 years. Joined as 15T Blackhawk mechanic. When flight companies need Non-Rated Crew Members, they pull top performers from the maintenance company. On deployments, soldiers from different MOS’s are pulled upon recommendations from their chain of command as “Door Gunners” if needed. We had a Door Gunner that we used on deployment that was from the infantry unit that we were supporting and wheeled vehicle mechanic. It’s like winning the lottery if you get to be a Door Gunner when it’s not your primary MOS

Growing up my neighbor was a door gunner in Nam, he had 6 purple hearts after being shot down 7 times! The only time he didn't get wounded in the crash was his last one which was 4 days before he was coming home. I'll never forget the night he ended up telling me the story, watching one of the hardest men you've ever met sob whilst talking about screaming in the face of his dead best friend is something nobody would forget hearing about... I found a new level of respect for a man I didn't think I could respect more. RIP Tommy you were a brilliant man

"Door gunner" seems like a fancy word for "bullet magnet"

I was always told by my sergeants that "Crew chief" Was the most direct route to helicopter door gunner.

When I met my nephews wife's father and found out he served two tours in Vietnam as a door gunner. I looked at her and said "it's a miracle you were even born". Everyone got it.

Marine Corps more or less does have this option. You can enlist with a crew chief contract, which basically makes you the designated door gunner, although you don't get to choose your aircraft.

I was a BLACK HAWK GUNNER. My job was a 91B Light wheel Mechanic. I was assigned to 82nd CAB @ BRAGG. Got lucky when I got there . They were looking for gunners for the next coming deployment in 2011-2012 Afghanistan.

In the Vietnam war the door gunner was the most dangerous role and had the most deaths throughout the war

I’m my head all veterans are hero’s but when it comes to the pilots they are legends. My grandfather was a helicopter pilot in the army during Vietnam, and saved many lives. His favorite saying is “I just drove the hero’s to work”. I am a high school freshman who just joined jrotc, and it’s safe to say he’s beaming with pride.

Basically there is no set door gunner, It's simply any helicopter crewman who has their hands-free in the moment

I have always felt that being a helicopter door gunner is just being a giant target in the sky. You have no cover and you hover over everyone like "Hey, here I am, shoot me"

My uncle was a door gunner in Vietnam, he was one of the first to try out the mini gun in combat. Till the day he died he never spoke one word about how many men he had to kill. He did say that he had to carry out wounded and dead a lot of his friends he had just made out there.
