The sleek new sedan is based on the Deepal SL03 from Mazda's joint venture partner Changan
The new EV will launch in the fall of 2024 in China and Europe.
Chinese models will be offered in both EV and EREV guises.
Mazda has not said if the electric successor to the Mazda6 will be sold in the US.
It’s been four months since Mazda unveiled the sleek EZ-6 at the Beijing Auto Show, initially announcing it would be sold exclusively in the Chinese market. However, the brand has had a change of heart and will now offer the electrified sedan as a global model.
Mazda said that the EZ-6 will launch in the fall of 2024, initially hitting the Chinese and European markets. The Japanese marque has not specified which European countries will carry the EZ-6, nor confirmed its availability outside of China and Europe. While there was no mention of the U.S., the model is not expected to be sold here.
While the EZ-6 might look like a pure Mazda creation and acts as a spiritual successor to the discontinued Mazda6, its underpinnings reveal a different narrative. It shares the EPA1 platform with the Deepal SL03, a Chinese electric sedan produced by Mazda’s joint venture partner, Changan, which offers both BEV and range-extender options.
Interestingly, we know that Mazda will sell the EZ-6 with both powertrains in China, it remains unclear whether the range-extender will be offered in other markets, such as Europe. The BEV model is expected to deliver a range of approximately 373 miles (600 km), while the range-extended version should exceed 621 miles (1,000 km) on a single tank of fuel.
Official performance details have not been publicized. However, it’s safe to assume the EZ-6 will have very similar specifications to the Chinese-market Deepal SL03.
This means EV models could be offered with 58.9 kWh and 66.8 kWh battery packs, which, in standard guise, drive a single electric motor producing 215 hp (160 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. A more powerful version, complete with 255 hp and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm), is also available in the SL03.
