According to this and to Dumbeldor, you are the one sorting yourself. It doesnt matter in which house you BELONG, if you don't wanna be there and therefore you won't try to belong to this house. The sorting hat is basically just there to shout your final hous according to YOUR wishes.

Reason why his kid was placed in Slytherin was because he knew if he asked he could be placed therefore it took no courage but was ambitious to be in his father's house.
