John’s best tone he had was in the early 70’s when he played Thinderbirds or his “ fenderbird” . The tone he had during Who’s next and Quadrophenia just can’t be beat.

When I began playing bass guitar beer after I began playing guitar, my endeavor was to do as much as I could with the fingers of my right hand without needing to reach for a pick. Nothing against guys like John Entwistle, Chris Squire, Peter Cetera, John Whetton, Greg Lake or any other prominent Electric bass player notedly played with plectra; I simply didn’t wish to echo them that way.
