Baekje – The Lost Kingdom That Lives On in One Secret Fortress

🧡KOPLE digital guide 1 with @gongjutravel @gongjucity (Instagram)🚌

Once upon a time, over 1,600 years ago, in the land we now call Korea, there was a kingdom called Baekje.

Baekje wasn’t the biggest or the most powerful kingdom in East Asia—but it was one of the most elegant, creative, and open-minded. Located by the sea in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula, Baekje became a hub of ships, trade, people, and ideas.

As one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea—alongside Goguryeo and Silla—Baekje constantly exchanged both conflict and culture with its neighbors. It was famous for its refined art, advanced architecture, and soft power—winning hearts through beauty and wisdom more than war.

But what made Baekje truly special was its openness to the world.

Long before globalization was a word, Baekje sent culture across the seas—introducing Buddhism, writing systems, and architecture to Japan. Even today, traces of Baekje’s influence live on in Japanese temples and traditions.

You can picture it:
Artists crafting golden crowns, monks carrying Buddhist texts to Japan, scholars shaping a cultural legacy that crossed borders.

But like many great stories, Baekje’s end was filled with drama.

In 660 AD, Baekje fell—defeated by its rival Silla and the powerful Tang Empire from China. Its capital city was captured, and the kingdom came to an end. Some of its people were taken to foreign lands, others fled, and some tried to resist and rebuild.

Yet, Baekje’s spirit never truly disappeared.

And if you want to feel its last breath…
Go to Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju.

This was Baekje’s final stronghold—
A place where its people made their last stand.
Where generals and kings looked out over the hills,
still hoping for revival.

Today, as you walk along the fortress walls of Gongsanseong,
you walk in the footsteps of a kingdom that once connected worlds.
