Carson Cooman (b. 1982) — Triptych (1999) for piano duet
Haley Myles and Matthieu Bergheau, piano

0:00 | 1. Fanfare and Tuckets
1:22 | 2. Arioso
6:47 | 3. Dance

“Triptych” (1999) for piano duet (one piano, four hands) is an early work and dedicated to the composer’s high school piano duet partner, Robert Blake. The three brief movements explore contrasting moods. “Fanfare and Tuckets” uses typical fanfare gestures. “Arioso” is a slow ostinato aria, where the unchanging ostinato is joined by small melodic patterns, often in tiny canons. “Dance” is fast and in mixed meter, inspired by the Bohemian furiant, especially the examples in Dvorák’s “Slavonic Dances” (a classic of the piano duet literature). The theme of the first movement returns in the coda.

I listen for engaging patterns and a feeling of momentum in a piece like this, kind of like what I look for in viewing abstract art, and this one definitely had them, and this one had both, which made it a lot of fun. As always, you guys make a great team!!

I liked the first and third movements. Fanfare and Tuckets was probably my favorite, had kind of a cool deepness to it thanks to the four hands.

The second one seemed a bit abstract for staccato piano with no pedal, but I actually think it would make a good piece for strings and woodwinds. It actually reminded me of The Planets by Gustav Holst, namely Saturn and Uranus (uh-oh, enter every Junior High classroom giggle).

Still, though, I can tell from listening to the whole thing that Carson Cooman likes to experiment a bit, and I can't fault them for that. They can definitely write piano music a lot better than I can. 😛

I hope more people submit their music. I like hearing the different ideas people come up with.

Maybe I'll submit my own music and it'll just be three minutes of octaves going up and down. 😉 Song name: "Octavius Maximus."

Nicely played, you two. I've been listening to the fugues as well, just haven't had time to comment on them this past week.

Keep up the great work.
