You in fact can learn to draw anime without sketching and realism.

That's what i did when i was 9, and then i just polished over time what i already knew how to do.

You’re really good !! The way you don’t even need construction lines before drawing, same for Genos. It’s definitely visible that you’ve done a lot of practice in sketching and perspective! Truly inspiring ! You motivated me to stop doom scrolling and get back to my sketchbook hahah

It’s not realism that is needed but anatomy or rather the proportions and simplifications (aka perspective and volumes) that come with anatomy

Since you drawed gojo can you draw geto ? ? ? I love your art btw ❤

I’m good at realism but the trouble with manga I have is the proportions, this may be because I am unfamiliar with drawing using those proportions

This looks incredible! I was wondering if you take drawing requests? If so it would be cool if you drew Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100

While I personally don't think there's any such thing as a "proper" way to sketch(sketch however makes you happy man, it's not that serious) I think you can't competely have something like anime without elements of realism. Aside from something like abstract, the overwhelming majority of art styles are still based in realism, and they distort it into a new style successfully becasue they are rooted in realism. Like anime, for example, the eyes are typically disproportionately large on the face, or the neck is too narrow/legs too long, etc. But it still pulls rules from realism, like how a head is structured, proportions of certain parts of the body in relation to others. While I'm sure it **possible** to leaen how to draw without practicing realism, it will be much harder. But if you take even a little time to get a basic foundation of realism, it will make the other styles so much easier to understand because now you can see what is exaggerated where, and figure out why something may not look quite right because it breaks a "rule" of realism.

There is always ALWAYS value in learning a bit if realism, because it makes it so easy to build off of and be able to explan your horizons and skillset so much faster. But that also doesn't mean you necessarily need to learn things like still life either. Take the time to do a few sketches from photos- people, animals, whatever, and learn how stuff is out together. Then, take that knowledge and start messing with it, exaggerate it, distort it, that's how you get new things and styles, but if you dont like how its turning out, take a step back and overlay what you know about realism and see if you can find what you dont like about it :)

Thank u for coming to my ted talk lmao.

I think that you will have to understand sketching, color concepts, and line art to be able to draw stylized works, however realism isn’t required to draw stylized arts. Not that it isn’t possible to do realism then transition to stylized, and not saying that it wouldn’t help to know human proportions before stylized proportions… but it’s not impossible, and for some, drawing stylized is harder than drawing realism, and vice Versa. It all really depends on the basic sketching and composition you learn, plus the artstyle you develop in my opinion

You can, but it’s better to try to learn both at once. The more you stretch your brain the more you’ll learn

Realism is most definitely a good foundation towards learning to draw manga, however you dont exactly need it, while yes it can help you understand the 3 dimensional form of the human body ultimately imo it just helps you to learn key points in making your manga look good but overall it ain't needed.

For me I have never really learned how to draw realistic things but am still good at art. What I did was just work on one part of my art skills at a time and I don't think that knowing how to draw realistically (even if it does help) is not something that is 100% required to be a good artist!

You definitely can because that’s how I learned I never had to sketch in my life and the drawings that I called “sketches” were either unfinished or just drawings I wasn’t satisfied with.
