Little basic test between a few set up's looking to find the best option for recording very loud car exhaust sounds.

In my opinion the Zoom H1 captures the best sound but can not take high SPL.

How did you mount the Zoom H1 to your bumper?

I have the Rode Videomic Pro plugged into a Zoom H1. I tried recording behind the car at a standstill in my driveway. When I rev the car, the audio gets really distorted and sounds bad. I have auto-gain on the H1 turned off and the level set to 1. On the Rode I had it on at +20db. Any idea why the sound got ruined? Thanks!

good job man but the h1 alone sucks for anything else than close-to-mouth conversation...put the zoom on manual, 24bit, 48khz, plug a shotgun mic in the input jack and set the level to ~ 50 or lower depending on how close to the exhaust you are, and in post, you delete the peaks, compress just a bit and normalize to zero db

because the top secret diffuser i can tell it´s a 350Z but it doesn´t sound like one. The Gain is much to high. I also recorded my 350Z with Videomic pro and Gopro and it sounds much better. I set the Videomic to 0db

With our Microphone you can record the exhaust or Turbo/Engine sound OR you can hear it in your Car (AUX) while driving LIVE!

How did you mount the Rode? With a second suction mount in the screw in adaptor? What's it like when it's windy? I'm guessing you use a deadcat?
