What Does the Defund the Police Movement Mean?

A majority of the members of the Minneapolis City Council say they support disbanding the city's police department. It's an aggressive stance that comes just as the state has launched a civil rights investigation after George Floyd's death.

Nine of the council's 12 members appeared with activists at a rally in a city park Sunday afternoon and vowed to end the department under the current system.

Council President Lisa Bender said she and the other council members are committed to "ending policing as we know it." Minnesota launched a civil rights investigation of the department last week, and the first concrete changes came Friday when the city agreed to ban chokeholds and neck restraints.

A more complete remaking of the department is likely to unfold in coming months.

When i read this video's title i thought, "finally someone is going to get in depth a little bit about how defunding the police would work". Instead you took about a paragraphs worth of surface level info and made a slideshow out of it. Just clickbait in place of real journalism... should have figured!

"Police in major cities are poorly trained, suffer from low morale and high suicide rates. Police usually feel unappreciated and disrespected by the public, and have become insular to protect themselves from the ever-present threat of getting killed on the job. Officer shortages means they're opening the door to more applicants by lowering standards, and working harder to keep officers on the force. These factors together with a national culture that glorifies rebellious behavior means officers are more likely to use force and violence during arrest or questioning of any non-compliant citizens."
"I've got a good idea, let's cut their budget."

"We need better trained officers. So defund them."
Yeah that's solid logic. Solid. Let me know how that works out for you.

Defunding the police does not solve our problems. Yes changes need to be made, but not all police officers should suffer because of that. Like David Dorn. He was a good cop.

It means that they have given up and said "Oh, now lets defund the police" which is dumb
