Everybody knows the Hilux and it certainly is legendary in the motoring world. So much so, that Toyota has taken to badge some models as Legends as they reach milestones.
Now introducing the "Tougherer" Legend 50, celebrating..........50 years of Hilux.
The new model introduces a bold new face to the Hilux range with a bigger and bolder grille plus updated and uprated headlights. It certainly creates a big and bold impression in the rear view mirror of other traffic on the road.
On the interior, it boasts the latest fascia and instrumentation with the large central infotainment touchscreen providing all the necessary including navigation and a rear view camera.
As I often say, modern double cab bakkies have become default luxury family cars with the Hilux providing abundant space for 5 to ride in cosseted comfort and certainly not wanting for anything in the luxury aspect. Add in the expected standard of fit and finish quality and the "Tougherer" tag rings true.
The Legend 50 is powered by the tried and tested 4 cylinder 2.8L diesel engine providing 130kW and 420Nm. This is certainly more than adequate under all conditions, whether off-roading or freeway cruising at the national speed limit.
The 50 is available with a 6 speed manual or automatic transmission, the test vehicle was the manual. Although it belies its size and bulk with how light the clutch and gearshift are in operation, I would certainly choose the automatic version if traffic conditions are a part of your daily commute.
Fuel economy should average around 10L/ 100km in general driving, very much the average for all similar vehicles.
During our test we took the Hilux to our favourite off-road course at The Wedge in Muldersvlei. As expected, with lots of use of 4 wheel drive mode, it handles everything that this course throws at you with ease and left me with the feeling that this was largely due to the vehicle and not the driver. Another example of "tougherer"., A separate video of off-road action will be posted.
Overall, we all know why the Hilux is the biggest selling vehicle on the SA market. 50 years of proof and endearing itself to not only SA but throughout Africa especially with the back-up of a dealer around every corner.
The Legend 50 4x4 manual is currently priced at R647 600 including a service plan of 9 services or 90 000km.

iMT stands for intelligent Manual Transmission...I'm aware u skipped it. It helps in synchronisation of gear ratios with engine

You can move from H2 to H4 while the vehicle is stil in motion but from H4 to L4 u need to stop, FULLY DEPRESS the clutch, put the gear liver at Neutral position...then you r good to go
