John Todderud is a multifamily investor and syndicator focusing on sourcing, underwriting, sponsoring, and raising capital for deals. He began in real estate during his software and technology career, buying multifamily real estate. First smaller properties, focusing on finding vendors to repair, improve, and manage, then shifting his focus to partnering with other ambitious real estate investors to acquire larger properties. John is now full-time in multifamily real estate.
His team acquires properties in emerging markets where rental demand is strong, the community is growing, and smart renovations drive rent growth. They invest in mostly stable properties but in need of modernization. They may not look attractive and may have old-style interiors and other annoyances that tenants don’t want. Those are opportunities to improve lives by improving communities.
In this episode, we talked to John about the differences between hands-on and hands-off investors, expanding into other states, the key to his success, investment partners and when to bring them in, his portfolio, and much more.
