Hyperborean Odyssey 02: Shetland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Part 2 of my Hyperborean Odyssey is in Shetland, Britain's northern most islands and the alleged site of the legendary Thule described by the ancients. I visited the archaeological site of Jarlshof which has Bronze age round houses, Iron-Age wheel houses, a Pictish broch and the largest Norse settlement in the British Isles. Shetland was under Nordic rule up to 1472 so it still has some strong cultural ties to Scandinavia despite also having a rich Pictish history.

I always learn the most extraordinary things in these videos. And they always have this wonderfully atmospheric quality to them, like a bit of ancient magic is seeping through.

I'm disappointed that Varg wasn't sitting at the bar in Thule

The best dog I ever had was a sheltie. He was a true natural mediator, every fight or argument my family would get into he would never shy away from putting himself in the middle and calming everyone down. Rest in peace Jack.

This was fantastic-- I didn't want it to end! That museum model showing the different layers of structures on island was really cool/clever

When you visit a remote Scottish island and no one burns you in a giant wooden puppet it's a good sign of Fate.

It was 5:30 in the morning and I'm laughing aloud at you coming across the unusual flags and asking the elderly couple if they know of the flags. 😂

An absolutely fascinating tour of Jarlshof, thank you very much! I'd love to go someday. Well done on putting together such an entertaining and informative video in presumably such a short visit to the site.

I love the music you use now. Such midwestern indie vibes. This was an amazing video and ive been obsessed with the Hyperborea, Thule, and Tartaria

Grand to see you in Lerwick of all places. A whole world unto itself. The howling of the ancient sea never quite letting up no matter how far inland you go. A mysterious call echoes in the core of us, each and all (be we Gael, Saxon, or Norse), a call seeming to come the ends of the earth -- yet deep in the soil. Roots call to roots, in such places.

Hope to live on Shetland or the Orkneys part of the year, some day, myself.

Lovely series, looks like a lot of work well done. Aubrey Manning did a lovely documentary back in the early 2000s about the brochs. Seldom mentioned these days by the BBC, so keep it up!
