This piece is from a collection of works titled 24 Pieces in a Free Style. Vierne was heavily influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach wrote a set of 24 preludes and fugues for the harpsichord, one in each of the major and minor keys. Vierne liked the idea of writing a series of pieces in each of the 24 keys, but didn't want to write them in any fixed style, so he wrote them in a "free style." Vierne liked this idea so much that he wrote not just 1 cycle, but 2. His Pieces of Fantasy also cover all 24 keys, but are much more virtuosic in character.
