I have a PhD in pulling off all nighters...
Tips from another expert like me
Lol I'm writing this and I have an exam in less than 7 hours and I have no idea about what I'm gonna write...
These tips are on how to completely avoid sleep and power through..
1) The temptation to sleep during studying especially before an exam can be ridiculously high. Your mind will tell you to sleep this one time, and fail the exam( because you're anyways not gonna score high grades, so it's better to fail this time, study well for the supplementary exam. And that way you're gonna score more marks). First thing shut down that voice!! It may seem logical but it is rarely practical. Tell yourself I'll rather fail but I WILL NOT SLEEP! Scream these lines to yourself. With proper planning you can score decent marks even now!
2) When you feel sleepy, stop studying from your books/material/hardcopy and start watching a youtube video about the same topic/concept.
3) Drink a lot of black coffee.
4) Don't shy away from taking a cold bath.
5) Don't always sit in one place and study. Walk/stand and study at the same time.
6) Imagine that you are a professor and you are explaining what you have just studied to a hypothetical audience. Do the explaining out loud and not in your head.
7) Always read and think out loud.
Good luck!

Him: This is for those who due to certain circumstances have to study a day before.
My circumstances: Sleeping, binge watching random videos, passing time, doing all kind of useless s**t that got nothing to do with studies...

I’m a typical procrastinator when it comes to my studies but I’ve somehow managed to keep up grades that are above average, so they’re pretty good. I’m proud of that. If I put in more energy and time into school, I could have done much better but it’s still good. :)

1. Perspective and Mindset
- Time is constantly moving forward - pushing you to the exam date
- Putting the energy from stressing out about the exam to actually practicing the exam
- Staying calm and steady
2. Surface Level Understanding
- Make sure you know the basic level understanding of everything
- Width>Depth - Going in depth of topic a and b the night before but you still have c, d, e and f to study
- Time management - knowing the basics of everything is better then knowing only 2 topics well
- Study in a way that you can answer all the questions in a basic level the use you skills to improvise for some depth
3. Do not underestimate sleep
- Staying up all night studying to remember everything then going to bed is going to take away from all that
- Sleep is more important then studying
- You are in a high pressure moment so you won't really be able to remember that well for the next day

There was a time I could just survive off my short term memory in varsity. I'd cram all night, skip sleep and study right up to 10 minutes before an exam. And I did well. Things were different then, my brain wasn't plugged into devices that taught me how to be distracted. I don't recommend studying like that now 10 years later when I have a board exam. People came to watch this video out of desperation. My advice is get at least 4 hours of sleep before your exam. Trying to study right before the exam requires focus which I have lost because I'm no longer a student. Studying is foreign to me now and if I try to pull an all nighter now, I'd just spend hours panicking and not studying. If you're screwed but have a day, study the most important topics and go through past year exams with questions and answers. The answers to the exam papers have a summary of what you need to know. You can't memorise answers obviously because the questions will be different but the theory on which the answers is based is the same. Lightly read the other stuff just so you have enough to write something for the less important sections. Good luck.

Exam is tomorrow, started seriously studying about 4-5 days ago. I rewrote ALL my notes, reviewed/reworked all the practice problems, and reworked the hardest HW assignments. I prepared as best as I could it’s in God’s hands now. 💤🛌

If you are going to pull an all-nighter, take a 20-30 minute power nap BEFORE you start, in the evening. This creates a buffer against sleep deprivation. Repeat these small naps and if possible, still try to get a few hours of sleep and wake up early. Prevention > treatment. People who are sleep deprived don't realize how deprived they are, and you'll end up having a fuzzy brain during the exam. Plus sleep is key in consolidating memories, rendering your studying more effective.

I have a maths exam tomorrow and I honestly have no idea on half the content. It's currently 10 hours until the exam and I have around 8 topics to study. Guessing we're just pulling an all nighter

I’m so good at improvising in an exam. Which is why I can pull off great grades in most classes even without studying. But maths... it’s impossible to improvise if you don’t know what you’re meant to do. I HATEE maths

Got two exams in 2 days. I'm ready for chemistry, to the point I'm confident I'll get an A. However physics is a pain in the ass. I would be lucky to get a C in that. Wish me luck :)
