After nearly three years of war, the mood among many of Ukraine’s allies has turned grim. Russian forces are making steady gains; Kyiv is running low on ammunition; and the return of Donald Trump to the White House has only added to anxieties about the conflict, casting doubt over not only the future of American military aid, but also the prospect of a negotiated settlement that is satisfactory to Ukraine.

They speak with editor Dan Kurtz-Phelan about the battlefield dynamics and political dimensions of the conflict—and about Vladimir Putin’s enduring ambition to reshape the global order.

Here is a solution: Russia withdraws from all territories caputred in the war that they started 3 years ago. This is because the aggression was illegal and because the wars cannot be rewarded by caputed territory of a sovereign country. As to the Crimea, parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Russian army also withdraw from, the UN peacekeepers go in and referendums under the international observers are conducted fairly. Only the population from before 2014 can take part and vote to either join Ukraine or Russia. The results are internationally binding and recognised. Ukrainian borders are set and not under any disputes any longer. Ukraine can join NATO and its security is guaranteed. End of the story. But of course, Putin would not agree to that because his motives are far from being fair or in good faith. His motive is to expand his empire and keep his total power forever.

The piece portrays a “common” and “fair” view of Russian gains and Ukrainians hanging on precariously. But these gains are minuscule, 50, 000 invaders are destroyed each month. North Korea’s entree was a fiasco and Russia’s culture and economy has been set back to 1991. I wouldn’t bet on the mob at this point.

A 21st version of the Domino theory used to justify the Vietnam War and its 3 million deaths aftermath.

I supported the previous peace proposition during Biden's presidency. That was the only way out. I see nothing but Russian victory now.

Everything is going to be more expensive if Russia is not stopped. Decades of economic disruption and massive human suffering. It is not ok simply because it is mostly someone else doing the suffering and dying. A global view please instead of me, me, me, me.

We’re neighbors, If you or I went to court or had an arbitrator to settle our dispute over our property line would you or I then decide to take over our other neighbors property in the neighborhood? Of course not, neither of us will live forever so what’s to stop changing boundaries in anyone’s future? Just look at the names and lines on ancient maps.
