Our Galaxy as a Frisbee - Size of the Visible Universe

Показать описание
The size of the universe may be impossible for anyone to truly comprehend, but that doesn't stop us from trying. We explore the size of the large scale universe by scaling our home galaxy, the Milky Way, to the size of a frisbee. How far are the closest galaxies, the furthest galaxies imaged, and the edge of the visible universe?

I remember doing a similar kind of experiment in like 4th grade, only for the Solar system. We started with the Sun as a tennis ball (I think), and then moved across our football field to each of the much smaller planets - Pluto (still a planet back then) would have been several kilometers away. You really got a sense of how tiny Earth actually is.

If the Milky Way was the size of a frisbee, how small would Earth be? A cell? A human? The size of an atom? How small is fear, heartache, or loneliness?

I try to explain this to people when they think we will one day jump into a space ship and go to another solar system let alone out side our galaxy. Not going to happen, it's too far. Star Trek will not happen. :-(
