I think the upside down face could be really spooky if you mime out your exaggerated conversation/lectures but every few seconds toggle visible for .5s at a time. Don't make any sudden movements, keeping them slow and fluid. You should appear as if you're flickering in and out of existence. Instead of being surprising you'd be unsettling.
