Modest increase in defence budget
The Union Budget for the Financial Year 2023-24 envisages a total outlay of Rs. 45 Lakh Crore or $540 billion Dollars. Of this, Ministry of Defence has been allocated a total Budget of Rs 5.94 Lakh Crore or $71.28 billion, which is 13.18 % of the total GoI Budget.
The 2023/24 defence budget has also seen increase of approx. 13%– from 5.25 lakh crores (or $63 Billions) in 2022/23 to 5.94 lakh crore ($71.28 Billions). Defence ministry has got highest allocation among all the ministries, followed by Ministry of Road Transport & highway and Ministry of Railway.
Capital Expenditures: 27% of Defence Budget
The most important part of the budget is the capital expenditure which is used by armed forces to purchase new weapons such as tanks, fighter jets, warship etc.
Approximate 27% of the total Defence Budget has been allocated for Capital Expenditure. The fund allocated for the capital expenditure is $19.44 billion or Rs 1.62 Lakh Crore. Compared to last year, the capital acquisition has been increased by approx. 6.5%.
