The term 'asymmetric warfare' has saturated discussions but missing is the idea of its use against that of one's competitor in preventing the depletion of US coffers via increased kinetic hardware spending on more ships, tactical nukes, missile defense systems, etc. in a renewed arms race. China is good at quantitative production and is using this strength to goad US defense into questionable expenditures, much like how the US goaded the Soviets. While US hardware need modernization, it makes more sense to neutralize competitors' asymmetric war chests (how to overcome Chinese A2/AD) in order to keep existing US defense structures efficacious.
