The Age Old Debate - Offroad, Auto VS. Manual...

Seems like everyone has an opinion on this. Real offroaders drive manual, automatic is better in the rocks, manual gets better gas mileage, auto is easier, manual is cheaper.. blah blah blah... I'm putting this debate in perspective with my experience wheeling both platforms! Check out this video to see which transmission might be right for you.

If I’m driving open roads, country roads, or mountain roads I still love a manual, but heavy traffic or off road, I prefer an automatic. I’ve done a great deal of off road time with a manual, and replaces enough clutches and u joints to form my opinion. Momentum is vital and I can’t shift a manual as fast as an automatic can. When I’ve been asked which I recommend, I usually tell them to buy what they think is best for them because I’m not paying for it and not going to fix it. My new Jeep is an auto.

As you were talking my thought turned to my wife. Though I learned as a 6-year-old how to drive off road without power steering and graduated too manual transmission she barely knows a manual on the road and knows nothing about tire position, ground speed, looking ahead and placing yourself for the next obstacle, etc. seems like building my rig with a manual transmission could take something that she could learn and make it prohibitively frustrating/embarrassing.

HOWEVER, I was going to run a crawl ratio of just over 100:1. Would that make enough of a difference?

(6.0 w/Mike torque can, '92-'93 nv4500, '83 Toyota t-case with 4:1 kit, 4:56 gears in a '74 FJ40 with 37'S)

Honest question. We are in our early 50's now.

Interesting input, thanks for the video. I run the factory AW4 in my XJ but will be swapping to an AX15 manual once the time is free to rebuild the JY pull. Looking forward to the difference on the trails and the learning curve of bumping the clutch up rocky situations.

First of all great video, very informative. I'm driving a 2018 JLUS with a 6-speed (man pedal) saving over $2000 option over the 8-speed auto. I can use the 2K for my future build.

Just bought my first Jeep and it's a 6 speed. I defiantly gotta do some easy stuff first before doing any kind of Wheeling.

Never heard of a hand throttle, always used a hand brake, or turned my foot sideways and worked both the clutch and brake.

Just sold my 2014 jK with a manual. Just got a new 2020 gladiator with a 8 speed auto. Off road is better for off road. Great video by the way. Look forward to more videos.

I prefer manuals for off-roading or mudding or just trail driving and daily driving. Only time I’d prefer an automatic is for rock crawling easier to work with.

Great informative video. I am looking to buy my first Jeep Wrangler JL soon. I have driven manual all my life ( 33 y/o currently ) and I enjoy it..I had a Mustang Roush manual, was a blast, then I drive my wife's automatic SUV..its convinient too, but becomes boring. So, I am stuck on deciding. Is trailing / semi off-roading more fun with Manual? Also 1 more question, I am not sure which Wrangler JL trim to get. Thinking between Sahara or Rubicon..Mostly want to use it daily driver and going to trails for fun. Thank you & Subbed.

Do you prefer an auto or a manual? Let me know why!

Manuals no longer get better mpg...It's been shown on many tracks by known professional drivers...However, it's close enough that one shouldn't base their transmission choice on mpg. The biggest issue is if you like to rock crawl, then get an automatic.

I think most of it is macho bs about only men drive manuals (cuz nothing screams manly like the overwhelming urge of a long hard shaft in your hand all the time) also most people that compare auto to manual always go back to like the 1st ever autobox not the newer smarter boxes that out drive pretty much anyone be it off-road or racing new autos change gears so fast a human just couldn't match it also all the auto 4x4s I've drove you can usually select 1st and 2nd then drive some go 123d plus hi and low and 2 or 4 wheel drive honestly think manuals are only around now because it's cheap an for man points
