GREENVILLE, S.C. – March 10th, 2024

No. 1/1 South Carolina won its eighth SEC Tournament championship in the last 10 seasons, and its second in a row with a 79-72 win over No. 8/5 LSU Sunday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The Gamecocks got a career-high 24 points from freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley, who earned tournament MVP honors for her effort in the Gamecocks’ title run.

Fulwiley hit a pair of 3s in a 24-11 South Carolina run across the first and second quarters that put South Carolina up for good. The game remained close throughout, but the Gamecocks managed to inch further ahead with each quarter.

The Tigers sliced a 13-point deficit to one on Flau’jae Johnson’s free throws with 4:36 left to play. The Gamecocks’ Raven Johnson answered with a bucket, and ever-steady Bree Hall added two more to stretch the advantage.

South Carolina held a 73-66 lead with just over two minutes to play when an intentional foul by Johnson following a steal by Fulwiley sparked tempers on both sides, after which the Tigers were left with five players and the Gamecocks six to finish out the game.

LSU got within five, but the Gamecocks closed out the game being strong on the boards and solid free throw shooting from Sania Feagin and Fulwiley.

Gamecock Notables

MiLaysia Fulwiley became the first Gamecock freshman to be named SEC Tournament MVP following her team-high 14.3 points per game on 48.3 percent shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, over South Carolina’s three wins.
Kamilla Cardoso joined Fulwiley on the SEC All-Tournament Team. The senior added 12.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game over the tournament, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that delivered South Carolina’s semifinal win over Tennessee.
Staley’s eight SEC Tournament titles puts her second in league history behind Tennessee’s Pat Summitt.
At South Carolina, Staley is 15-2 in postseason games when a trophy is on the line – 8-1 in SEC Tournament, 5-1 in NCAA Regional Finals, 2-0 in NCAA Championship games.
Ashlyn Watkins added five blocks in the title game, including three in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.

And we really missed our PG Poa. I wish her a quick recovery

Good game. LSU fan. These two teams need to be on opposite sides of the bracket. I'm still waiting for a decent officiating crew when these two play.

Angel, Even without Aliyah Boston you are not good enough to beat SC. You should send thank you cards to Caitlin Clark, to Lisa Bluder and to the rest of The Iowa Team for paving the way for you to "win" your ring.

LSU will play dirty if given space. You see several players throwing elbows, and inciting anger. It's really the crazy coaches fault.

Flaj commits 2 intentionals on one play and refs still let her finish game what were they watching

Flaujae braced herself. Watkins was walking in her direction on purpose, Watkins didn't try to move out of the way either, Watkins fully tensed up and flexing walked right into Flaujae with intentions to bump her. So flaujae braced herself for the impact, she didn't put hands up and push watkins ..

Lsu we have to work on how to stop 3 pointers because in SC game we allowed them to make a lot of 3's

LSU is No.3 seed for good reason. They are athletic but somewhat raw in fundamentals.

How did SC cheat or how did the refs cheat? LSU threw multiple elbows, pulling hair and all this other shit. They play dirty then whine about the calls. They were outplayed and out coached, plain and simple. HVL does not fit in their system at all. Reese talks way too much then bitches about calls. She can be a dominant center for tho

In my personal opinion, I believe LSU can beat them but as of right now they don’t have a very strong team yet and especially a strong bench, I will finish off this year, Angel staying, and working for next year, I don’t think Van is a good fit, Williams is good but needs some growth, Del needs to go and they need another strong center

This is the one game that has truly shown me the amount of genuine hatred towards LSU. Both teams were in the wrong, and yes Flau’jae was wrong for pushing whoever that girl was and she did start that fight. Now, let’s look underneath the surface to what really happened….the only person who truly hurt them during this game was MiLaysia. All Flau’jae truly did intentionally was she fouled MiLaysia, which for trying to get a layup is a pretty smart move and the refs really didn’t try to do much about it. Now could she have handled that much better? Yes, but like both coaches said after the game….everyone’s emotions were running high. I mean let’s be real here….how many of you play sports? Probably some of you, now how many of you have played in a game in which things were starting to go wrong for your team, you tried your best to get a score but then something stopped you, you got upset and in the moment you took your anger out onto someone even though it wasn’t your intentions? I’m sure some of you can grab your balls (no pun intended) and admit to that. Flau’jae never meant any actual harm, she was just super in the moment and she also apologized to Coach Staley after the game. Now, Kamilla on the other hand….while she was trying to stick up for her teammate, she was wrong for pushing Flau’jae that hard especially when the damage had already been done before that. Flau’jae intentionally fouled MilLaysia but unintentionally pushed that other girl, and Kamilla intentionally pushed Flau’jae. LSU doesn’t back down…..if you come for one of them, they’re gonna come for you. It’s also messed up how people wanna say that Angel is a horrible person over “trash talk” when so many of these girls do trash talk. Angel might be extra with how she does it, but it is never that serious, intentionally, and she never says anything crazy offensive. Some of you take the trash talk too seriously and act like it’s the worse thing in sports. Now, she definitely shouldn’t have pulled Kamilla’s hair but at the end of the day….it all happened, it’s all done….both teams played well (for the final score to be that close.) Also, how are y’all gonna shame LSU meanwhile lately they’ve been a few other teams getting into fights as well? LSU is not the only team, but they’re the team that y’all choose to hate on.
