"The United States is a strong country, but its people are a mess." I have never agreed so emphatically with anything else from these street interviews. We are all seriously a mess.

"US and Taiwan are like father and son. The son has to do what the father wants. Otherwise the son would be ignored." Sad. I am speechless.

As a Chinese mainlander, I find this fascinating. I live in Europe and have met some Taiwanese friends. There's some sort of unspoken rule between Taiwanese and mainlandes who want to hang out together: you don't talk about politics. Nobody forced the "rule", it just happened naturally.
Growing up being taught that "Taiwan is part of China", and I always know that Taiwan wants to be independent. But I never heard that "China is part of Taiwan". I even burst out laughing when I first heard it. Because come on, are you serious? The "China" that has stood there for thousands of years, belongs to an island? But hearing the two ladies explain it in the video, I guess I see the logic behind it.
When I was younger, I would defend the logic that I was taught, because that's waht you grew up learning, it's part of your value system, it's part of YOU. But now, I just wish whatever logic it is, it can make regular people's life better. People are what matters, not ideas.

"I think the US election was about choosing the least bad option" She nailed the question. Haven't had a good choice in a while, just bad and more bad.

Interesting series of interviews, but I have to call out that the caption translation has a number of inaccuracies.

There are a lot of times when interviewees respond with 大陸 or Mainland China, while the captions simply say China. There are subtle but significant differences when you reference Mainland China vs China, as the use of the term Mainland may assume that there is a broader China, of which the Mainland is a part of.

Additionally, there are times when interviewees responded with 主權, or sovereignty, while the captions translated it as independence. There are huge differences in those concepts. Maintaining sovereignty and declaring independence can mean the difference between peace vs war, respectively.

I'm not usually one to nit pick translations and captions of YouTube videos, but when it comes to such a sensitive topic where the doctrine of whether or not a world super power goes to war is predicated on subtle linguistic expressions, these slight inaccuracies can really convey a significantly different view to viewers who are not familiar with the complexities of cross-strait relations.

Thanks for this Asian Boss! Would love to see a follow-up asking about how Japan fits into the mix as well. I saw an article in Japan Times today saying that, of the Taiwanese citizens they polled, over half expect the Japanese to intervene in case of invasion versus around a third saying the US will intervene.

Many said Taiwan depends on US in economy but as I know 46% export of Taiwan is to China.

I love how most interviewee's opinion on economics of Taiwan is the exact opposite to their reality, does not remember the exact number, but I know for sure that China is the number one trading partner to Taiwan in both import and export, which also significantly exceeds the amount with the U.S., it's not even close. But anyway, thanks Asian Boss for once again, delivering a fantastic, balanced and authentic street interviews, keep up the good work, you guys are champions!

Fun fact: just like the Korean War, the Chinese Civil War never officially ended. With superior air forces back at that time, the KMT forces was actually planning to retake mainland China even if it was only the southern half, but guess who came to intervene and told em to stay put?

Uncle Sam, the US.

I appreciate the video but just like some others have pointed out, you need to have the political context and translate with accuracy from Chinese to English. The word independence is not to be thrown around. I don't think the people in the video mentioned independence, they're all talking abt a concept which is more like

Some very nice interviews, I especially liked the one at 3:30 and the one after it. I do always worry a bit about how much nuance I am missing since sensitive topics like this can be hard to properly translate.
