D-16 was reconned to be the sector he was assigned to work. Orion was given a name in the era when Sparks were given names. D-16 was sparked (cold forged) later.

In an alternate timeline Megatron and his 16 pals K Pop band have a dance fight against Optimus.

Brian Tyree Henry did an amazing job as Megatron and he really understood the character of Megatron. Also I didn’t know his name D-16 was named after his original box. But, I do know that D-16’s miner design was based off of early concept art and prototype of his toy as it used to have a black helmet instead of a gray helmet before it was revised.

Just to restate what has already been said, but D-16 stood for Destron 16, with Destron being the descriptor prior to the US coming up with the Decepticon branding.

At 1st thought its was "Diaclone-16" because the toys were originally from the Diaclone toy series.

It was namely Takara who did this, and they continued the number comvention all the way to Victory when G1 ended. Hasbro never did numbers. And making Megatron into D-16 as his precursor name was a move done by IDW previously, since they were the ones to first give a miner origin. Then he snuck out and proved himself in the Iacon ring, eventually gaining the name Megatronus and finalizing his name to Megatron when he formed the cons to rebel against the senate.

Always thought that he was called 'D-16' because it sounds very close to the word 'Decepticon'

Um, actually the D stands for Destron, not decepticon. Destron is the japanese term for decepticon

I thought it was a reference for DIG, since he began as a miner.
