These are some of the most majestic creatures on the planet. They are literally sea serpents. The fact that they swim without limbs is mindboggling, given that most other aquatic vertebrates have developed flippers or fins for swimming. The closest thing that sea snakes have to a fin is their tail, which resembles a caudal fin. But they have no pectoral fins and yet still move so gracefully and effortlessly through the water column. Some of the closest creatures in body plan to sea snakes include lampreys, hagfish, lancelets, and pikaia. I can imagine that there are also some swimming worms (many worms have developed appendages, but some probably haven't and can still swim). Eels are also similar to sea snakes but possess tiny pectoral fins as well as an elongated dorsal fin.

Ahh. Its true then. Sea snakes do exist outside of the Pacific area. They are not all eels, they really are snakes.
