VIDEO DESCRIPTION

Rick Ellis spends some time with Javier “Showtime” Vasquez, a 4th degree blackbelt in Jiu Jitsu, and former professional mixed martial artist with victories in the UFC, WEC, EliteXC, and King of the Cage.

Since retiring from MMA Javier has devoted his life to developing and teaching his unique style of Jiu Jitsu, which he calls Strike Based Jiu Jitsu.

His approach places heavy emphasis on always protecting yourself from strikes. I was excited to spend some time with Javier to learn what his system is all about.

Javier is a 5th degree blackbelt. I mistakenly said 4th in the video intro! Sorry Javier!!

This is a return to traditional. All jiu jitsu and wrestling should think this way.

I dig it. This is the next level of Chris Hauter’s “train sport, think street” mentality.

11:22 the concepts are universal whether striking or not, understanding what behaviors you want to elicit from your opponent to direct the match.
Good stuff sir, thank you both!

The Gracie Academy has been teaching this for decades. Sports jiu-jitsu and street jiu-jitsu are completely different.

I'm so happy you created this video, I'm a big fan of your channel and I'm a bjj practitioner under Javier Vazquez. His philosophy and understanding of Jiu-jitsu is unique and efficient, what I like most about it is that his system is easily applicable with or without striking.

I was introduced to his stuff through Gracie (rener & ryron). I have always really enjoyed the attention given to where your opponent's hands are. That goes a long way for self defense bjj. I like his BJJ stuff

Javi Vasquez is a pioneer in So Cal BJJ/MMA and kicked cancer's ass also. I don't train at his gym, but my professor and him grew up in the game together. And he really does ride a lot....I'll often see him as I'm running errands on weekend mornings

Nobody ever talks about this. People think they can fight because they know an Armbar, but in reality BJJ is just a game based on fighting. Its a lot harder to do BJJ when someone is punching you face in. True BJJ involves controlling an opponent in a way that makes sure you don't get your face caved in, otherwise you are just aggressively cuddling your boys.

It’s what BJJ was always supposed to be and was for a long time

Super good. Our lineage in Canada is more-or-less descended from Javier.

in other words, "his concept /his system of jiu-jitsu " is just what ju jutsu (jiu-jitsu) was supposed to be (and was) to begin with before it became sport based . Lol 😆. Either way its nice to see other people pushing this message and this style of training (besides just the Valente bros)

Very respectfully, even though you said it in the past on one of your older videos that there wasn't a difference and you can learn all you need doing sport jiujitsu, there is a major difference between sport jiujitsu and self defense or combatives jiujitsu. People like to argue Rener and Ryron down about this topic but the focus is 1000% different. What you do on a mat, you cannot do in a street fight or cage for that matter. When I coach my police friends we aren't doing x guard or imanri rolls cause theyll get killed in the line of duty. Theres a major difference in self defense as to self offense. Especially when guys are wearing duty belts and not sure who's a friendly or not.
I should have made the comments from my Exalt JiuJitsu youtube page so you can see who I am. I'm no big name or fancy world beater but what got me imto Jiujitsu was self defense and at My little school all we do is self defense jiujitsu. Ive had plenty of my blackbelt friends come through to share knowledge with my group and I've heard on several occasions " I, ve trained jiujitsu my whole life and never have i had someone throwing punches, kicks, or heads butts at me. We train with knives and guns and my first rule is always if someone pulls a knife or gun, run but we train for the please God let me survuve this with the least amount of cuts possible scene. There is a major difference

Javier system was developed out of the need to avoid being hit while fighting MMA which works for NO Gl & GI based on application! This also addresses the over forty grappling community because his system allows him continuously contact with his opponents. I like his system! Thanks for sharing this was really helpful and brings a new perspective on jujitsu to work in both sports, MMA, and self defense situations!
