You gotta understand, Gordon Ryan has *perfected* positional control. So when someone finds a way to escape his back control, it’s like making a new scientific discovery to the BJJ community. Now, new counters to said move must be studied - and it must drive Gordon crazy when he discovers a hole in his game (because he needs to address it immediately).

This is what makes Gordon the goat. He doesn’t just roll, practice various positions, and look for submissions. He STUDIES every position rigorously to make sure he has PERFECTED it. He knows EVERY COUNTER, every escape, everything that can happen from every position - and knows the perfect response. Listen to how him and John approach BJJ - it’s like they leave NO ROOM for the opponents to do anything. They’ve essentially reached the ceiling of BJJ understanding - and maxed out the human being’s genetic potential in regards to controlling human beings and making them tap. This literally includes using PEDs just to ensure said mathematical maneuvers are backed by physical superiority.

So again, when a guy like Nicky does some weird shit like this and suddenly escapes Gordon’s back control (which, scientifically speaking, is supposed to be mathematically impossible to escape by human beings with 2 arms and 2 legs), it throws Gordon into a doubtful panic, ie a mental breakdown - wherein he and his coach must immediately address the move and study the appropriate response - then drill it until it’s no longer a scientifically possible option.

This dude has real skill. Jiujitsu is amazing. I've done it 11 years and you never stop learning. No other style of fighting affords to the ability to use less strength and power and be more deadly the more you know. When I fist started I would hold as tight as I could and gas myself quick over the years i've learned that once you know proper technique you let it do the heavy lifting for you and even extremely subtle tweaks to proper technique can take you from a good jiujitsu practitioner to a great one..like this dude.
