The 2020s have certainly been an… interesting decade so far to say the least. While things slowly tick back to what we can consider normal, there are a lot of daily challenges that we face currently that some of us never may have experienced before. Rising gas prices and other shortages have snowballed into making the weekly grocery trip into an obstacle course for the integrity of your wallet. However, it doesn’t have to ALWAYS be like that. Today, let’s cover some ways that you can combat rising grocery prices and help save yourself a bit of money.
One of the most tried and true methods of grocery shopping is “Never go to the store hungry” and this still rings true, you’ll often grab up anything that catches your eye as your brain is frantically trying to figure out its next meal. Instead, go to the grocery store with a solid list, and preferably while you aren’t starving, it’ll help save yourself from those pesky impulse buys.
On that topic, while it may be tempting to buy already prepared foods, you will pretty much always get a better deal out of buying the ingredients yourself and making it at home. While it may be less exciting than getting to skimp out on the work, your wallet will thank you for putting in the extra effort, and you’ll usually even get more food than had you bought it prepared, making a great option for leftovers!
We may not often think about it, but there’s a definitive design to how grocery stores lay out their products. The things that they want you to buy are often more expensive, fancifully designed, and at eye-level. Keep this in mind when shopping for that next jar of peanut butter, because looking down a few shelves you’re often much more likely to find better deals, either through generic brands, sales, or clearance deals.
If you’ve got the space for it, buying in bulk can be a great way to get a better price per unit on non-perishables and household necessities! Most grocery stores sell bulk options, while warehouse clubs like Costco will sell pretty much everything in bulk. If you’re interested in learning more, check out our video in the description breaking down the best ways to be a bulk shopper!
The age of technology is in full-swing and there are plenty of great ways for you to capitalize on this to assist you in your grocery journeys. Every store that you can think of has an app, and these apps are filled with clearance, coupons and markdown tabs making saving easier than ever. Utilizing these apps can help you narrow down which stores are having great deals on a specific product, without having to drive back and forth across town to every single one. As an added bonus, most of these apps utilize some sort of reward system, giving you a bit of store credit for having shopped there frequently.
With all this in mind, hopefully you can try some new tricks like online ordering, generic brand shopping, or buying in bulk to help get some extra bang for your buck as grocery prices continue to climb!
