A young married US military soldier, Paul Sutton (Keanu Reeves), returns home after World War II and meets a girl, Victoria Aragón (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), along the way. Victoria is pregnant and terrified of returning home to her Mexican family where her strict over protective father, Alberto Aragón (Giancarlo Giannini) will surely disapprove of her out of wedlock pregnancy. Wanting to help, Paul offers to pose as her husband to calm things over until such time he is free to leave again but as they spend time together, they start falling in love with each other. However, Paul is still married and they have to hold themselves back before fate would intervene and tragedy would ensue and they would finally be together.

Jarre was asked to provide the film with a romantic sweep infused with traditional Mexican ethnic accents. His score is This love theme animates the film and is inextricably entwined with our lovers and is emoted with a sweeping and lush lyricism. The use of a delicate music box style theme juxtaposed to Paul’s recurring nightmares of war is brilliantly conceived and serves to amplify the poignancy of Paul’s inner struggles. It offers enduring testimony to his unsurpassed skill and innate gift for writing romantic scores. This effort is multi-thematic and perfectly attenuated to the film’s imagery and emotional narrative. Indeed the Main Theme stands as one of Jarre’s greatest romantic themes, one that will resonate through time.
