Picture what commerce would be like with tracks twice as wide. We'd have less semi trucks on the road. More efficient logistics etc.

The train would be too large and too heavy. The rail beds would sink under the weight. The bridges would be too expensive, and rebuilding all of the tunnels would be a nightmare with the construction equipment available at that time.
