Wow History and fruit history all in one. You've outdone yourself my friend. People tasted that same fruit from those same plants back in the 70's, same plants, different government..

Many thanks for posting this! We will take the kids the next time we visit Sofia. Other than thorns, did you see any hazards or highly poisonous plants to watch out for?

Beautiful and sad at the same time. They should try to find some funds to maintain it again. Maybe the EU should provide some funds. But how will they be able to determinate all these plants/cultivars? Definitely an interesting place to take many cuttings or seeds/fruits from. 😃

I wonder how many champion plants are hidden amongst derelict Soviet gardens like this. After all, many of the best varieties of exotic plants designed for temperate climates have Soviet origins. Pomegranates, feijoas, tea... the list goes on. They may not have been the best at economics, but they certainly were masters of fruit trees. Such a shame to see gardens like that just abandoned.

At 20:11 there is a sign in Bulgarian Оранжерии (Orangery). Did you manage to visit that part too?
What did you say about the Armenian blackberry?

how's the giant hogweed in Bulgaria? I know Russia's infestation is gnarly, but I'm curious if the satellite post soviet states have it as bad.
