Mercruiser 4.3 (3d) - Installing Distributor (Another Way)

In this video I show how to install the distributor (static time) in a MerCruiser 4.3 V6. Since I can’t get access to cylinder no.1 I’m using the valve transitions for cylinder number 4 to indicate the status of Cylinder no. 1 being on the compression stroke.

Moccasin marine, Your videos are awesome! Some of the best information out there! Your indepth explanations are very helpful, showcasing your professional experience. ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH.. I have one question. On setting the distributor, do you have the rotor direction aligned with the pickup? Because the cap has a small notch on the bottom that sets on the distributor in a specific orientation. But when I put the cap on the rotor is facing 4. Do I then use 4 post as #1?

At 1:09 there was a black wire just hanging there. Where does that wire go and what is it for? Just noticed it free floating on the back of my engine.

Much easier way would be to pull the #1 cylinder spark plug, put your finger covering the spark plug hole and then turn the crank till you feel the compression stroke stop.

Thanks for your videos. I was able to get the distributor installed on this new rebuilt engine I'm installing into a boat. engine fires.

I have a question if you don't mind me asking. The boat is shooting out water from the exhaust manifold where the exhaust manifold mates to the cylinder head on one side. I am using muffs to pump water into the boat but no water comes out with the exhaust. Could this be an internally cracked manifold? I tested the manifold and water flows through it off the boat and there's no visible cracks that I can see. It's kinda stumping me. also when I shoot the water hose into the Y pipe with the manifold disconnected it comes out of the propeller.

Great video. This question is a bit off topic for this video, but I noticed that the oil cap says 5W-30. My oil cap says that as well, but every operations manual I've seen for the Mercruiser 4.3 recommends 20W-50. Which do you recommend?

Distributor If is in 100% timing always always going to fall in the same spot like the outside off the distributor, plugs number 1 facing the front of the motor or cables? Or that doesn’t matter?
