15 years in, Ford STILL hasn't nailed down making quality phasers. Unbelievable.

I can see you are fairly young, your knowledge of engines is awesome, you have something alot of people dont have, keep up the good work, love the videos, stay safe and god bless

Hold the pedal to the floor & crank it for 2-3 sec. Primes the oil system before startup. Then when you start there should be little or no rattle.

Remove the Ford oil pump and install a Melling HO oil pump for this engine as well as other older Ford engines. The increased volume and slight pressure increase will prolong the life of this engine and improve its performance/longevity. Fordtechmakuloco makes this recommendation and it works.

If you use the factory oil filter, it comes with a hight quality anti leak down valve made of silicone. This makes sure you have oil pressure instantly on start up.

The problem begins with using oil filters with rubber anti leak down valves and the don’t seal so after you shut the engine off, it slowly leaks down and it gets a dry start every time and this does damage over time. If you want to use an aftermarket oil filter just make sure it has a silicone anti drain back valve. Most OEM oil filters have this and it’s for a reason. I know AEM and a few others have it.

I’ve researched this and it’s the answer.

Your teaching a lot about the eco boost. Good things man. Those motors are completely different

I’ve had a bad rattle upon engine starts on my 2016 F150 with the 5.0 ever since owning it. Not necessarily just cold starts, sometimes just 15 mins after running it hard in high temps (FL). Ford dealer changed some components years ago while it was under warranty. I think they changed the phaser for the intake cam; but, I’m not 100% sure. The problem persists and they refused to admit that it was a problem because it happens intermittently. Since then, I’ve just listened to it, hoping it won’t cause timing belt (or other engine) failure. Recently, it started also idling rough at lights sometimes (to the point of almost stalling) and threw a check engine light and code p0022, mentioned in your other videos, while finishing an acceleration up to about 60 mph.
I got this truck 2nd hand and another dealer in TX (around 20k miles I think) changed the short block trying to fix some problem (perhaps the same one).
I have been running AMSOil synthetic 5w20 ever since owning (hoping to extend the life of the motor and keep forever). Recently, I’ve tried to go back to Motorcraft just because I’ve heard these 5.0s don’t like synthetic. The rattle persists. I’m recording most of my engine starts recently for evidence that it’s happening. It’s now at 82k miles and it has never been fixed.
Yesterday I talked with Ford Customer service at HQ in Dearborn, MI. They scheduled yet another appointment at the dealer (a different dealer than the one who couldn’t truly fix it). That appointment is scheduled for June 9th.

In your expert opinion, what IN GODS NAME do I need to ask of them to please replace to fix this problem once and for all? From other research and your videos, I’ve gathered this list…can you think of anything else? Thanks in advance. Maybe I can get you to call their best engine mechanic at Tamiami Ford in Naples for me? I had high hopes for this truck, hoping it would run the 200-300k miles I’ve heard such good things about. And May buy the new electric Lightning, unless Ford hangs me out to dry on this truck. Any advice you have would be most appreciated man.
1) New Intake VCT Cam phaser bank 2 (or should I ask them to change both intake phasers?)
2) New VCT Solenoid
3). Front cover gasket
4). Front crank seal
5). Guides?
6). New timing chain?
7). Tensioner?
8). Oil change (to get brand new oil into new phaser).
Or should I just ask Ford HQ to change the whole motor and offer to split the cost with them? I can send videos of the noise but it sounds just like the timing chain rattle I’ve heard on all the videos.

Hi and Thank you! What's the solution?

What is the potential downside of NOT addressing this? Other than the annoying loud cold start?

Working at a Ford dealership, I think I see at least 2 of these jobs a day. Our engine tech has it down and can do them real easy and decently fast.

Nice explanation but what do you do to fix it

I have had that same rattle ever since I bought my 2013 3.5 L EcoBoost. My friend has the same truck except his has a 2015. He also has the same rattle. He has a friend that is a mechanic who worked on it extensively to try to figure out the problem. His solution was he put a spring on the wastegate of the driver-side turbo. His truck has 205, 000 miles on it, when you start it has a clean start with no noise.

At my old job we had the Ford passenger transit vans. One was an Ecoboost V6, the others were NA V6s. The NA van with double the mileage (120k) that the Ecoboost had, was a fantastic engine. It started quickly, smoothly, ran great, sounded great. Nice and quiet, no rattles or knocks or misfires or shaky rumbling. The Ecoboost was atrocious. It took very slightly longer to start up, it had several random misfires that made it sound and feel like an old lawn mower being cold started (you know that sound and feel) and it had a loud rattle followed by a pretty noticeable tappy and clacky valve train until warm. It had less than 80k on it and it sounded like it needed replacement. Absolutely terrible. It really didn't have a much more desirable driving experience over the NA vans either but I don't know if the fuel economy was better. The trans on that model also shifted in a way that I disliked. It was firmer and the gear ratios and shift mapping was just overall not as nice to drive as the NA vans were. Total disaster in my opinion. Each driver typically had a van that they were frequently given for the day, though there was no set assignments so sometimes drivers got different ones. I don't know why, but one driver preferred the Ecoboost van over the others. I suspect he might've been dropped on his forehead as a baby. No other explanation for his choice. 🤣 That van was embarrassing to pickup guests with in the morning. I'm sure many were getting into it and thought "You guys are a 5 star resort and you can't afford a nicer van to replace this stumbling clacky piece of crap? Jesus..."

Does the pin shear? Or is it just bad design

I bought a brand new f150 in 2019 and wanted the eco boost because of the performance but after only 20, 000 miles mine started the rattle and it only got worse over time. I was told Ford knew of the problem but it wasn’t covered under warranty so I got rid it the truck. Aside from that awful noise I loved the engine. It almost towed like a diesel.

not always the case some times the primary chain is so stretched out it will also cause rattle on start up

I like my 25-year-old Chevy 5.3L V8; simplicity, reliability, and durability, still runs like new.

Ford's continuing problem with cam phaser lockout pins. No surprise here.

I had this on my 1st gen. Got it fixed at 219k. Now at 224k and an oil change later, it's starting to do it again! Just very intermittently though and nowhere near as bad as it was. I'm not entirely sure why these brand new parts would degrade so quickly. I wonder though if the collapsed coolant hose I have could have anything to do with it. The day I noticed the hose is also the day the rattle started again.
