How to Record a Conference Video Submission at Home?

Many PhD students are creating their FIRST video at home due to this pandemic, and as an academic YouTuber, I think my experience could help you save time on mastering this creative process!

The software I use is iMovie, free with any Mac computer:

From personal experience, Mac has great processing speed for video editing and has been a great investment than building a gaming PC from scratch (I have really considered that if I had a permanent home!).

I have bought a cheaper refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro (2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with Retina display - Space Gray), it had every function I needed to edit videos and I loved how portable it is!

I see the price of a refurbished Macbook Pro is even cheaper ($500-1000) now! That's probably due to the new Apple computer chip on the market.

Anyways, if I have inspired you to buy a basic Macbook, you could support this channel by choosing your model via this link:

For PC users, Shotcut is a free software for video editing (thanks Élyne for introducing me) to this software:

Adobe Premiere is paid, but it has great reviews (also check if your University already has a free Adobe license!)

My mic costed 47.9 EUR last year, look like the price is not dropping!
Rode SmartLav+ Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone for iPhone and Smartphones, Black:

This is the headset I actually had a nice audio quality. I can also share that the Symphonized earphones was the 3rd one I have bought in 6 years. In fact, I could not use other headsets!

Symphonized NRG 3.0 Wood Earbuds Wired, In Ear Headphones with Microphone for Computer & Laptop, Ear Phones for Android with Stereo Sound (Black & Gray)

Great tips Vera! I had a chance to attend one online conference this year and there we were requested to submit a 3 minutes flash talk video of our poster presentation. For this I had used Canva as the graphics there are simply amazing and fun to use. Recently Canva has an option to make and download powerpoint slides in video format (.mp4), so I used that and then combined it with my audio (which I recorded with mic on my headphones) on Videopad software. It was a fun project and I sort of loved the tricks I learnt while doing it. But yeah nothing beats in person human networking of the conferences, I really miss that. Hope someday in the future we will be able to go back to that.

Hi Veera! Hope you are doing good.
I am applying for a postdoc position in US. They have asked to give 3 references with contact details not the reccomadation letter.
Can you plz tell me what does it mean? Should I submit (recommendtion letter) with the application or they will ask it later on.
Nice video 👍👍👍

Virtual conferences require PhD students to be more comfortable with technology, so it could be worthwhile to invest in new gears such as a computer with faster processing speed and a good mic.

By the way, if I have inspired you to buy a basic Macbook, you could support this channel by choosing your model via this link (I have bought a refurbished one last year at $1298, but this year it has got cheaper!):

This is the headset I demonstrated actually had a reasonable audio quality for a video. So you might already have a mic that works well at home!
