My additions to the fixed proposed by thebmj:
Forbid high level employees from a large corporation to join regulatory agencies.
Forbid high level employees of a regulatory agency from joining large organizations.
Forbid either of these employees to join startups as board members or PR team. They can join as research workers or other internal facing employees.
Tax big corporations to fund independent organizations that will review, analyze, and certify the trial data. These organizations should be the public's representation.
Formulate a non-government non-corporate drug review board that should go over the phase IV results of all the newly approved drugs and recommend to stop or continue based on these results.
Non medical hospital management should not be part of the therapy policy maker or enforcers.
Correct the political leaning of the state medical boards.
Fine the media pundits/gurus that represent drugs/therapies without having the credentials to discuss medicine.
On yearly basis make public all communications about drug trials and approvals.

The pandemic has opened my eyes to the complete failure of our government to do what is right for the citizens. FDA and CDC needs to be gutted and re-built with controls that limit the influence of private companies and authority to see ALL the data.

I had never understood how we were so misled about sugar in our diet from the 60s till the 90s and even into the but it is becoming clear that the failure was our blind belief that the government orgs were actually doing their jobs.

Your detailed analysis has opened my eyes as to how our governments, here in Australia, have based their mandating solely on the industry's reports! What shocked me is that the Chief Medical Officers, on whom the Premiers and the PM based their mandates, our doctors loosing their licenses with their Medical Association, the AMA, fully complicit, all these things were based on the industry's say so. Needless to say the thousands of unfortunate patients who died due to the pandemic could very well have been saved with treatments costing merely $20 AUS. Thank you Dr. Been, you brough a breath of fresh air on an otherwise stinking and foul atmosphere.

Corruption throughout the entire process. Have witnessed my entire career, fought against it, won some battles. What is most disheartening is watching the erosion of the intelligent mind to blindly accept that which does not make sense, even to the most casual observer, let alone an educated, intelligent one.

DrBeen, this is THE subject nowadays, and I think that it is a lost battle in advance, unfortunately. All that we have seen in these last two years tell us much about that. I'm a doctor (pediatrician) in Brazil, 34 years practicing, and God knows how difficult it is to convince people of all these problems. It takes us long time to explain about strategies of industries, about conflicts of interests, about alternatives to medicalization, etc. People tend to consider us fools no to give away to corporate clout.

Thanks for bringing this article to my attention. Actually surprised BMJ printed this. We live in a global society with power resting with the wicked via the mechanism of money versus virtue, conscience and morality. When a corporation commits a crime - even what would have been called murder if committed by a person - all they get is a fine, which is immediately passed on to other consumers. Any corporation found guilty of such crimes should lose their corporate license and ability to operate, and the individuals responsible for said crimes need to be held personally responsible and receive suitable punishment.

Dr Mobeen, couldn't agree more. You've articulated so clearly the flaws and failings in practices and processes which are motivated by greed, and which lead to the corruption of the very principles of medicine. The love of money is the root of all evil.
