How to Wear a Skirt for Portuguese Folk Costume

Why do my Portuguese folk costume skirts have a slit at the center front, instead of at the side, like 18th century skirts?

Simple - it's an easy way to make the skirt fit different sizes. The opening gap always gets covered by the apron.

You have no idea how happy I am to have my history mixed with my love of historic clothing! I have been in love with our folk wear my whole life and it started my fascination with all historic fashion!

The skirt is pretty similar to Finnish folk skirts if not for colours. Opening at the front as well hidden by the apron.

So beautiful. Traditional clothing in many European countries is highly similar: Sweden, Italy, Germany...etc

Interesting that that outfit was considered appropriate mourning wear, whereas now I think people would think it wasn't because of the bright blue.
