I believe this film is a one of the great drama’s ever made. It is so subtle in its quiet soulful ways that it has an impact that is very, very moving. As the years go by this film will stand higher & higher. Anyone associated with The Dig must be so proud. I started watching & stopped after a few minutes as I realized it was special. I knew that it should be shared with my wife so I waited till we could enjoy it together. I really don’t care how it’s received, or critiqued, because, I enjoyed it so much.

It's a brilliant cast, really, and the story is so fascinating. I am blown away!

A beautiful production, the acting in its gentle subtlety was a privilege to experience.

Carey Mulligan could hold a potato and still be inspiring. One of those rare truly beautiful films

The first time Basil and Mrs Pretty walk out to the mounds, you can feel that Basil already knows something special is there.
At the same time, he is unsure of her motivation.
Is she just a rich widow with time and money on her hands?
Then she speaks with such quiet eloquence and passion about "digging" since she was "old enough to hold a trowel."
Basil looks away from the mound to Pretty. absorbing her words. At that moment, he knows they are kindred spirits and the excavation will be revealing more than the mound's contents. He says "the past, it speaks to you, doesn't it?"

From that moment their purpose is conjoined.

That was a great film. But was that open for public or not? Ralph Fiennes is always amazing. Thank you.

And every character is delineated - there are no "small" parts in this film

"It did need to feel awkward, accidental and found"

It's well made but was disappointed overall, the archeology took 2nd place to several concocted made-up personal dramas, several major finds we're excluded and those that we're included barley got any explanation, they could easily have made enough drama out those.
Basil Brown worked closely in partnership with the Ipswich Museum on the dig and yet the film choose to show this as an ongoing conflict.

I enjoyed the discomfiture of Carey Mulligan as she realised that she wouldn't be first to garble on...

The interview with the major players was spoilt by Carey playing with her hair and swearing; Ralph appeared to confuse astrology with archaeology.
