I worked with a secretary clueless enough to do exactly this with British customers. After two minutes of struggle, I told her to spell it out in triple digits, and they let out an audible sigh of relief.

This is why we need to adopt switzerland's numbering system. "Septante-sept" is just better.

That’s why French in Belgium is better we say
70: SEPTante
90: NOnante
But French in Switzerland is even better because they say
70: SEPTante
80: HUITante
90: NOnante

I'm not a French native speaker but work costumer service in French and this is a constant pain, when people start saying their phone numbers like that my anxiety goes to the roof 😅

knowing the struggle from german. People also prefer to say 78, instead of 7 8 ... and we start numbers from right to left. so 78 would be eight and seventy. It might be even more confusing.
