I am not sure of the rules now but when I club raced a laser in North Carolina in the US he'd be protested for ooching or moving the boat in an unnatural to aid propulsion.

What is the purpose of a roll tack? It seems unnecessarily risky compared to tacking with the boat more balanced. Or is practicing a roll tack a precaution for the off chance you're caught in a cross wind or gust?
