Elon Musk & SpaceX Upgrade Everything on New Raptor Totally Thrilling Scientist's Minds...
The next phase of Starship development is upon us, and it’s nothing short of exciting!
We’re seeing advancements across the board: new Starship versions, refined production techniques, upgraded test systems, innovative launch processes, and so much more. Yet, amidst all this progress, one crucial system remains somewhat enigmatic—Raptor 3.
What upgrades are being made to this powerful engine? When will it be implemented?
Elon Musk has dropped some intriguing hints, making bold statements that have left scientists buzzing with anticipation.
Let’s dive into the details and uncover the latest updates on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
Elon Musk & SpaceX Upgrade Everything on New Raptor Totally Thrilling Scientist's Minds...
The final month of the year has arrived, and SpaceX is already gearing up for the next major milestone. While the next Starship flight is projected for early next year, 2024 has been a remarkable year for SpaceX’s development journey. With four Starship flights completed, the company has made significant strides in validating the performance and reliability of its Raptor engines. From smooth activations and shutdowns to precise navigation, acceleration, and deceleration, the Raptors have demonstrated their capabilities with remarkable consistency. One of the year’s most notable achievements was Booster 12’s successful landing using the innovative Mechazilla arms, a feat that showcased the potential of SpaceX’s unique recovery systems.

However, achieving reliability with the Raptor engine is far from SpaceX’s ultimate goal. The company’s ambitions stretch far beyond, as evidenced by the unveiling of Starship V2 and the ongoing development of Raptor 3. Dubbed by Elon Musk as “a work of art,” the Raptor 3 engine is poised to redefine what is possible in rocket propulsion. Since its introduction in August, Raptor 3 has been a topic of great excitement and anticipation. Musk recently described the engine as “truly sublime engineering,” adding that its capabilities are so advanced that even seasoned veterans of the space industry initially deemed them impossible.

With the FAA restrained from tormenting Space X they can make more progress.

Nice to get information in 10min, instead of 21+ . Keep up the good work.

I think it comes down to how many Raptor 2's are left in inventory.

And you'll never see the catch of a ship with a booster sitting on the launch table. Ever.

Amazing how Raptor gains thrust as they seem to make it more simple…

Elon Musk is an adventurer. He takes on challenges that only one in a billion people would consider worth the risk. I wouldn’t have the energy to work like he does, but I love watching him fight the bears and naysayers.

In Raptor 4, it is expected that the methane and oxygen are to will themselves into the chamber and ignite simply out of respect for Musk and SpaceX.

The interesting thing is 3d printing has come of age. No longer just for prototyping but for final production because the design just can't be made any other way.

It's amazing how clean the engine looks compared to previous versions. I wonder how effective replacing parts would be or if it's more effective just building a new engine if parts start to break down. What is the "life expectancy" of the engine. What they do to keep the engine running smoothly. Do they have to clean any parts, or is it ready to go for the next flight immediately after landing.

Many jealous people throwing rocks at Elon Musk, that he was not a genius, SpaceX team is. The guy just established so many companies, isn't that genius enough. Many genius we know don't even have a company of their own.

I can see why engineers would be buzzing...not scientists. It's not simpler, it has the complexity integrated into the 3D print

OK, haven't been totally sure that this account wasn't just AI generated until today. "2023...2024" solved that for me. Unsub

Just a thought, the outside ring of 20 engines are touching with sea level size expansion nozzles emitting the jet at sea level pressure. What if the nozzles were notched a bit and pushed up to allow 21 or 22 engines to fit in the outer ring? While all engines are balanced and firing at the same pressure I would guess that mixing the jets for the last few expansion psi would not reduce efficiency much at all? What was left of the expansion nozzles could still be cooled. Maybe worth it for the extra thrust?
