I read the book earlier this year and loved it and was really hoping that they'd carry over the humor into the movie. I'm glad to hear that it was funny! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm really excited to see it!

Well, now definitely I want to read it. I saw the film the week it was released here in Peru and absolutely love it, but now with your review and knowing how good it is I definitely want to get a copy of it and read it, specially on english because I do know that some things get lost between the translation english-spanish. And yay for a character that relies and uses science, I absolutely love this.

Just finished the book at the weekend and was able to watch the film this evening. I haven't been this excited for a book in so long. I didn't expect it to be so funny but I laughed most of the way through (when I was tearing up for the harder bits). I did miss some of the detail (more of Mark's working this out on his own in the sciency way) from the book to the film, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out. I think the actors were brilliantly cast. I can see myself reading this again and I know for sure I'll be watching the film multiple times. ALSO - one of my favorite quirky things was when, in the film, they were talking about Project Elrond and explaining where the name came from (LOTR) and giggling because Sean Bean was at both.

Totally agree with you. It was a great adaptation. That's such a good idea to not read the end so you're surprised by the ending because knowing what was coming in this case took out the anticipation bit for me.

I was interested that you didn't finish the book before you saw the film as Andy Weir specifically recommended not doing that in his reddit AMA iirc, but it seems to have worked out :) it's an interesting idea! The Martian is one of the very few books I am a hipster about as I read it as it was updated chapter-by-chapter on his website years back, and it was interesting to re-read it in its finished form without science corrections at the beginning of every chapter and not having to wait weeks to get past a cliffhanger! I'm very glad it's become so successful.

Whikle readng the book I was thinking that it was already structured for a film adaptation, and I think it translated very well into the more visual media. I really enjoyed the book s well, the constant defy of man against Mars and the odds. Like you, I mostly enjoyed the irony, the fact thtat to survive you have to bring down the impossibly huge challegne to human size sarcasm and crumble one piece at a time :)
