Christmas Market in Wrocław, Poland

CHRISTMAS MARKET IN WROCŁAW, POLAND - The Christmas Market in Wrocław, Poland was one of my favourites! It stretched out around the town square in all directions and had the atmosphere of a charming Christmas carnival. I even met Santa at this Polish Christmas Market who led me to the big Christmas tree for the perfect photo.

There were different rides and we chose one where you could fly in one of Santa’s sleighs pulled by reindeer. It gave a great view of the surrounding market and delighted us far more than I imagined it would!

I came across something I’ve never seen at a Christmas Market before: booths of animatronic-type puppets telling famous fairytales. The puppets move around while a narrator recites the beloved stories. There was Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Hansel and Gretel. It was fun to see lots of people - not just kids - gathered around to enjoy. I found it quite charming, which complemented the whole feel of the Wrocław market.

We found a booth selling miniature-sized Polish donuts (pączki) which we wanted to try. They are deep fried with sauce and powdered sugar on top. Not the easiest thing to eat but at least the powdered sugar looked like snow!

I also learned about some Polish Christmas traditions that I absolutely love. They all revolve around Christmas dinner which, in Poland, takes places on December 24th. On Christmas Eve, they don’t start eating until the first star appears in the night sky. How beautiful is that?! Someone - usually a child - is dispatched to the window and when they spot the first star they return to let everyone know it’s time to eat. The meal consists of twelve courses of twelve different dishes. This symbolizes either the Twelve Apostles or the months of the year - nobody seems quite sure. Every household sets an extra place at the table in case someone knocks on the door or turns up at the last minute needing a place to eat. This is meant to signify welcoming and inclusivity. I think it’s a lovely idea and symbolic of what Christmas is all about.

We ended the night by riding the Polar Express train. This market was awesome and I enjoyed it so much! What did you think of it?

MY VLOGMAS 2017 SERIES
This December I’m doing Vlogmas on my channel! Vlogmas is usually where you daily vlog each day of December leading up to Christmas. I’m doing my own version where I’ll upload new videos three times per week on my regular schedule (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and each ‘episode’ will be Christmas themed from my travels in Europe! I’ll be exploring Christmas markets - and trying all the special foods - in 6 different countries and learning about unique and sometimes crazy-sounding Christmas traditions. I absolutely love this time of year. I’m looking forward to experiencing all the different ways people celebrate and sharing it with you.

What do you think of rides at a Christmas Market?

Poland has the best Christmas markets in Europe in my opinion, -from Britain 😄

It's 88% Catholic in Poland and that is reflected in the great Christmas tradition which is the best in the world. A great place for family, incredible celebration. Christmas dinner settings are gorgeous and the spirit, lit with candles, is quite wonderful. In a large family, my grandmother would prepare for 2-3 days cooking and cleaning and all were welcome to visit. Polish food can be amazing made with special traditional recipes and care.

Your vlog inspired me to book a flight and go! I got back yesterday. We had three nights in an airbnb. We loved Wroclaw. Beautiful buildings, waterways, great restaurants and of course, the Christmas market. Sadly the small rollercoaster that you are having so much fun on was not there. But we really enjoyed our time.

I first went to Wroclaw as a just turned 18 year old in 2001 travelling abroad for the first time from the UK and alone too. Always have a soft spot for the place. I have been every year since but only in summer. Well i finally went there this past Xmas and it was great. I had one of those cone shaped pastry things, might be hungarian i think and a mulled wine out of one of those elf boots lol. Then a nice drink in the speak easy mobster bar on the square before flying home. Great.
