The monument in Kalemegdan is called "Victor". It was dedicated to Serbia after WW1. During WW1 Serbia had 4 million citizens and was fighting a war against an empire that had 55 million citizens. We won but 52% of male population of Serbia was gone. Monument represents Serbia - proud, still standing. Holding a sword (might) in one hand and pigeon of peace in another hand but beside those two and pride - figure is naked as he has nothing more left. Everything else is gone.

Kalemegdan (thats new name, from Tuurkish times) is actually about 4000 years old. It was first made by Celts and it was called Singidunum. Layers of brics tell you the timeline. Big blocks are from Roman times, cobble stones and other white stones are from Ottoman times and red bricks are from Austro-Hungarian times. Woodwork, most of buildings, and metal is Serbian. There are 4 gates and they are metal plated wood with spikes that didn't fell for nearly 7 centuries so far. And yes, Victor represents victory over Austrians/Germans and says "you shall not pass, we won naked". The bird is a pidgeon, a symbol of peace. Sahat Kula... where clocks where born. Only older one is in Novi Sad. And people wearing sajkacha with African brothers broke the Solun/Thesalonica front that decided WW1 French on horses were 2 days late and they don't have any captured enemy weapons to show in history. We also have F-117 wing in museum, the Black invisible Hawk downed only in Serbia.

That park inside Belgrade fortress was created only in 19th century after liberation from the Ottoman rule. Old fortress walls and fortifications were actually stretching all the way to the Republic Square, they actually during renovation of the square few years ago uncovered remains of the old fortress gate but it was preserved and covered for now. Those outer walls were demolished in 19th century to make space for urbanization of that Old town core.

Actual Belgrade up to 17th century was fully inside fortress walls, in the place of todays park (and especially that lower park toward the river) you had many buildings, churches etc. but most of them were destroyed over time in many wars, so eventually they decided to clean the space and build a park. Type in the google Belgrade medieval images, you will see that Belgrade fortress had actual densely populated city with many buildings and towers in the place of this park.

An excellent show about the Belgrade Fortress. That's why it would be good to visit Smederevo Fortress one of the largest fortresses on the Danube in Europe and Ram and Golubac fortresses, also on the Danube, which are very attractive.

MAN, I've been living in the city for 34 years, visited the open air museum multiple times both as a kid and as an adult and I never realised that it goes through the "bush" to the BIG GUYS! IS1, T34, Panzer IV, and Stalin's organ, the Katyusha! Man, thank you for this video!

If you like fortresses, visit Golubac in Eastern Serbia, as well as the Manasija Monastery, which has huge walls around it. :)

During WWI Belgrade was capitol to Kingdom of Serbia, Ottomans were pushed from Balkans in First Balkan war just before WWI in 1912. And Austro-Hungarian empire was defeated
3 times by Serbian Army in 1914. On second atempt they occupied Belgrade, but they were driven out just for two weeks later, at begging of the war Austro-Hungarian empire had
48 milion people, and Serbia had 4 milion, so it was not just better equipment going for them. First alied victory in WWI was Serbian one, against them at Cer mountain.

That missile system that you saw is THE actual missile system that downed the F-117a stealth bomber during the 1999 bombings of Yugoslavia, and if I'm not mistaken part of that plane is in the indoor part of the military museum in Kalemegdan
