THE CUT is Fatih Akin’s epic drama about one man’s journey through the Ottoman Empire after surviving the 1915 Armenian genocide. Deported from his home in Mardin, Nazareth (A Prophet’s Tahar Rahim) moves onwards as a forced laborer. When he learns that his twin daughters may still be alive, his hope is revived and he travels to America, via Cuba, to find them. His search takes him from the Mesopotamian deserts and Havana to the barren and desolate prairies of North Dakota. On this odyssey, he encounters a range of very different people: angelic and kind-hearted characters, but also the devil incarnate.

This film is a slept on classic! It must've cost a ton to make. Several countries, languages, dialects, terrains... Serious cinema. Learned more about the story of the Armenian diaspora. Bravo!

Makes you wonder why Serj Tankian wasn't asked to do the score for this, since he is Armenian and enjoy's doing movie soundtracks. I know he's still touring with SOAD, but this film came out last year and was finished earlier than that. Aside from the fact this is mostly a German production which is odd I suppose, and the lead, Tahar Rahim, is French with only a few Armenian and Turkish actors. But still, glad to see film recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

What makes a film considered an indie film? I'm just curious. Is it because it's not produced on a huge budget

I watched this movie and it kind of fucked me up. The beginning showed the suffering in the Armenian genocide. Brutal. So sad. A great movie.
