Wow I needed to shut my ego to understand this. People it's not about just doing the work and not getting the reward you want to be successful. It's about avoiding those mini credits and admiration that might make your peers envy you and might make you the target of their schemes.

If you keep fighting with envious people, you won't be able to focus on what needs to be done.

This is the first time the stoic philosophy is demonstrably wrong. You must care about when someone does the wrong thing and gets away with it. A society that tolerates that will soon ceases to be an civilized society. As our society looks the other way on elite criminal impunity, it becomes more corrupt and more dysfunctional.
